Earth Day is a special day to honor the natural beauty of our planet and to enjoy the great outdoors, so the Smoky Mountains are the perfect place to celebrate this occasion! Earth Day always takes place on April 22, and there are many fun activities that you can do to join in the celebration on and around this date. Here are 4 fun ways to celebrate Earth Day near our cabins in the Smoky Mountains:
One of the best ways that you can celebrate Earth Day is by helping to clean up the environment, so join Spur Clean Up Day on Tuesday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to noon! Everyone is invited to join the Keep Sevier Beautiful organization to pick up litter along the Spur, a stretch of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that runs between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. To participate in the event, simply bring a pair of gloves and meet at Gatlinburg’s Spur Welcome Center at 9 a.m. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream will be on site with free ice cream for all participants!
Bring the entire family to come out and celebrate the annual Earth Day Festival in downtown Gatlinburg from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 26! This wonderful event features music, face painting, craft stations and games, as well as the opportunity to learn about easy ways to go green. Gatlinburg area green businesses and organizations will be participating at the event and providing information about Earth Day. While attending the festival, be sure to pick up an Earth Week T-shirt that features the artwork of a local student! All T-shirt sales benefit the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides donations to schools, local scholarships, community education events and the Gatlinburg Goes Green Program.
Another great way to celebrate Earth Day near our cabins in the Smoky Mountains is to enter into the Gatlinburg Earth Day 5K! Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in this USATF sanctioned night race, which is scheduled for Friday, April 27 at 10 p.m. in downtown Gatlinburg. You can register for the Gatlinburg Earth Day 5K in advance online, or register in person on race night starting at 8 p.m. The registration cost is currently $30, which will increase after Thursday, April 26 at 11:59 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
If you are unable to attend any of the Earth Day events, plan your own celebration with a scenic hike through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! This is an excellent way to view the amazing natural resources of the Smokies, including the park’s beautiful wildflowers that bloom every spring. There are dozens of popular hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so select one of the many trails to view everything from old-growth forests to waterfalls!
