Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish…and he could win $500!

The Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament is coming back to Gatlinburg for another year of good-natured competition and awesome prizes. Anglers of all ages will have the chance to reel in some of the 10,000 trout stocked in over 20 miles of streams in the area. A Smoky Mountain tradition for 15 years, this Gatlinburg event is one of the best fishing competitions in the Southeast.

Where and When

The Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament consists of two competitions over the weekend of April 5 – 6. On Saturday, the fishing period begins a half hour before sunrise and comes to a close at 4 p.m. On Sunday, anglers will start a half hour before sunrise and end at 2 p.m.

The actual fishing will take place in streams all over the Gatlinburg area, but all catches have to be officially weighed at Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge by 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. You can find Patriot Park at Old Mill Avenue, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863.

Competition and Prizes

12 winners will be picked from competitors in the following four divisions:

  • Visitors
  • Visiting Youth (15 & Under)

The Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament will give out over $10,000 in cash and prizes! Whoever catches the largest trout will take home a whopping $500. If your catch is on the puny side, don’t toss it away because there is also a $500 prize for the smallest fish.

Other prizes and drawings include:

  • Gift certificates
  • Fishing equipment
  • Amusement passes


All competitors must have a Tennessee fishing license and a Gatlinburg day permit. To order a state license, call the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency at 1-888-814-8972. To get a local permit, call Gatlinburg City Hall at 865-436-1400.

Participants must use one handheld rod and can submit up to five fish for the final weigh-in. Trout have to be at least 7 inches long.
